Georgia
Kotretsos has been a student in this Department for the last four
years gaining the National Diploma in Fine Arts in 1999 and the Bachelors
Degree in Fine Art in 2000. Ms Kotretsos has been an excellent student
throughout the course attaining top marks in her major subjects. Her
work and attitude are characterised by a lively intellect, a quirky
wit and a willingness to take risks. Her recent work has been interested
in exploring alternate spaces for art production, through the Web,
through the mail, in public spaces as well as alternate forms for
this production: questionnaires, cards, booklets and other more direct
personal interventions. This "conceptual" way of working has been
underpinned by a very accomplished grasp of the more traditional art
processes of drawing and painting in her undergraduate years.
Ms Kotretsos' energetic and vibrant personality has made a strong
impression in the Department and has contributed to a very creative,
dynamic and stimulating peer group who should go on to form an interesting
new generation of young artists, I have every confidence that Ms Kotretsos
has the required talent, energy and commitment to make her mark in
the creative world. |

This
letter serves to note that I have been Ms Kotretsos' supervisor for
four years (1997-2000) at the Technikon Natal, Department of Sculpture.
Throughout her undergraduate and graduate study, she has exhibited
an enquiring mind that has consistently challenged and explored the
formal and conceptual boundaries of her subject. She has challenged
the limited creative context of the museum and gallery and brought
her work increasingly into the broader social text where she has promoted
the interactive nature of her deliberations.
In may respects her work sets up a dichotomy by responding to the
challenge of inclusivity without fully resolving the usual alienation
from a conservative public seduced by familiarity.
Her intellectual enquiry would benefit enormously from a ore progressive
social-cultural context where she could investigate her ideas in a
less reactive community.
Ms Kotretsos has distinguished herself as a student of character,
intelligence and professionalism and as such, I have no hesitation
in highly recommending her to any program of higher creative and cultural
study. |

I
know Georgia Kotretsos through an internship programme at the NSA
Gallery completed as a course requirement for her BTECH Fine Arts
degree at Natal Technikon.
During this time she has proven herself to be inquisitive and attentive.
She has shown initiative through given tasks and adapted quickly to
the gallery environment.
I also know Georgia as an exceptional artist. She has taken part in
two curated group exhibitions at the NSA Gallery in the past year,
and were selected as a participant in an international collaborative
project scheduled at the NSA Gallery in 2001.
My best wishes accompany her for the future. |
